Maybe I don’t say it enough.
Thank you.
It’s not how I was raised.
My Mamaw had a good/bad habit when it came to manners.
It started early and I don’t remember it, but I watched it happen with cousins younger than me.
A verbal correction, and sometimes a swat.
Not a hard one, but just a pop to remind us that manners were expected.
Please. Yes Ma’am. Thank you.
Excuse me?
I can’t imagine some young parents today swatting a kid on the bottom when they treat some adults with disrespect.
Like an air of entitlement.
Yet…
I did it with my kids without hitting them once.
Good manners and good grace.
Which made an impression on other adults when we were out.
And opened opportunities for them I think.
I wonder if the kids who forgo manners now will have as many chances.
I guess it depends.
I can’t imagine everyone grew up with them.
Yet folks have opportunity every day.
So maybe manners don’t matter or only matter so much as the importance we give to them.
And while a yes sir might go a long way, I don’t lose much sleep when I don’t get it as a response.
Though I do tend to like the baseball boys more who say it.
They seem more charming to me.
While the kids who don’t seem more… rude.
Uncultured.
Lacking somehow.
Even if they’re good ball players, I compare them to the boys who use their manners, and they don’t rank quite as high.
And even though I know it’s a bias, and may not be true, perception is almost everything in this world.
It might give you an edge.
The way the world is, we need all the edges we can get.
Plus saying thank you shows appreciation and we need all of that we can get too.
So my twenty hour challenge to you this week is to say thank you, and please and maybe even I love you.
Kind words are a kind deed and more of those might not help the world we live in.
But I’m betting they might.
Thank you.

Good manners cost nothing but people do remember those that have them as a simple thanks can make someone feel better about themselves or about the at their day is going.
