Everything old is new again.
Until the shine wears off.
Fifty is the new thirty.
Until it’s sixty or you’re thirty and look like you can’t buy beer.
I wonder how much of our lives are shaped by catchphrases.
Words thought up by men and women locked in concrete towers in Chicago or New York, putting together focus groups to test reactions and then rolling them out in 30 second increments to get trapped in our brain.
And become our culture?
I mean, who among us hasn’t spent time wondering “Where’s the Beef?”
And all the damage, “Have It Your Way,” has done to us in our expectations for life.
Now it’s Memes, pictures with words that tell us how to feel or what to think-
A modern day version of hieroglyphics except we have those too.
They’re called emoji’s and I literally heard a kid say the other day,
“Smile Face” instead of laughing.
It’s like a joke I saw in a movie where the girl said “LOL” instead of laughing.
Or the scene in “Idiotacracy” where everyone was wearing Crocs.
It starts with people who don’t know anything about the world outside of their own experiences, testing and refining words, thoughts and culture that bleeds across the country and get’s picked up.
And they don’t start with good ideals or ideas.
They’re mostly just trying to sell something.
Toothpaste. Beer. Chips and Drugs that cause anal leakage.
Side effects may include death, but at least you won’t feel anything while you shit yourself.
Excuse me… leak.
I do the same thing, sometimes.
Use words to try to sell books.
Words that tap into emotions.
My best?
How far would you go to keep your kids safe?
Or
Would you trade one life to save fifty million?
I put those in ads on FACEBOOK and people responded.
Not quite in the droves I wanted, but they commented, and shared and clicked, which is the entire purpose of the ad the words were on.
I try to keep it in perspective.
I mean, the best part of waking up isn’t the coffee in my cup.
It’s waking up, right?
It sure beats the alternative.
But if I want to sell books on…
OR
Then I’m going to have to learn how to speak the lingua franca a little better.
Learn Meme’s and emoji’s and work on catchphrases to incorporate into pics for links and more.
Which is a good thing.
Because you know I love to learn, and in learning, love to share.
I just hope I get it right.
Again.
