I’ve lived by a motto.
If you want to be an average person, do average things.
Or the opposite of that, really.
I bet you can count on one hand the number of people you’ve met, talked to or know about who have ran three 100 mile races in less than a year.
I bet you only know a few award winning filmmakers, who’ve written several dozen pulp fiction novels and who has owned a couple of businesses.
Who has travelled to the dark depths of Africa as a specialist with a mission, roamed around Europe like a homeless guy returned to a country that doesn’t seem to love itself as much as it once did.
I’ve been thinking about average a lot this month, as I do what’s required to pay the bills.
Once upon a time, I was surrounded by ordinary people doing extraordinary things.
And when I wasn’t with them in the physical sense, I was reading books and biographies and articles and tomes about their actions.
Their thoughts.
The why behind their deeds.
Maybe trying to find a blueprint.
Or map.
Now the world is going to mourn five folks today.
The Titanic claimed more victims in a tourist sub that went down and didn’t come back up.
Led by a man who was not living an ordinary life.
A group of four men and a boy who were not living an average life.
Some people will say it was too risky.
Some would argue it was stupid.
And a lot of folks will as why.
But…
If you have to ask why some people strive to live outside the lines, then you probably wouldn’t understand the answer.
There will be men and women sent to Mars in the next five years.
Some will die.
There will be committees and hearings and oversights led by mediocre people who will “want answers.”
Even if they couldn’t comprehend them.
Astronauts burned up in an Apollo rocket and we still went to the Moon.
Planes crash, cars crash, and people move on every single day.
The vast majority of them moving on in ordinary ways.
Sad ways.
Because it is almost always sad when we lose people to a tragic accident.
Especially when it’s unexpected.
Except these men were doing something.
Above average and exceptional.
May we all be so lucky.
Have you done something that makes people shake their head in wonder or worry?

Hate it happened wish they were here even though I did not know them. Life for all people on this earth are evermore precious. My condolences to their families.
