I blinked back tears as the world started to swim in my vision.
“Thank you for being so kind to me,” she said.
Fighting back tears of her own.
It was a sudden sort of feeling, welling up from way in left field and hitting almost as hard as a haymaker from the same direction.
And it was a stupid TV show I was half paying attention to as I read on the love seat.
Someone, a person, was grateful for people being kind to her.
So much so, that she had to mention it.
Grateful for the kindness.
It touched me because she recognized it…
And broke my heart that she had to.
Because kindness is so often not the first thing many of us get.
Maybe it’s a case of you get what you expect.
Expect folks to be ass-holish and they live up to the expectation.
Or down to, in this particular case.
Expect folks to act smart, and they don’t.
Or drive better and they can’t.
Or be better and they won’t.
One man told me that I was the problem, because as a practicing Stoic, or one who strives to practice it more than not, I should have no expectation of others.
Which makes me sad too.
No expectation of kindness.
No expectation of mutual respect.
A stranger thrust into a strange situation should be able to have a reasonable expectation of some social contracts.
Me, for example.
If I can’t have kindness or respect, I prefer silence.
Because those assholish comments, suggestions or others as made tend to demolish stoic walls and flip that switch in me that wants justice.
I can’t stand bullies or people who feel entitled.
Most of those people have never ate shit or been in the shit or dealt with it.
The shit.
And so they feel a little better about themselves by pushing others around or putting them down.
Creating a world without kindness.
It makes me a man of two minds.
One that wants to ignore it, put it behind the wall and let people be as they are.
And the other that wants to introduce them to the business end of a throat punch and remind them that actions have consequences.
Sometimes those consequences are running off your mouth and getting your ass handed to you.
Kindness prevents that.
And we live in a tough world where we don’t expect it enough.
Which makes people get thick throats and glossy eyes when they do.
Like sighting a unicorn in the wild.
We don’t see it often enough that we get used to it.
So part of our job, yours and mine, is to actively engage in kind practices.
Practice makes second nature.
When I see the man in the mirror, I ask a question.
