I like to get up early.
And drink a pot of coffee.
Add 4 aspirin to take care of the little aches and pains and basically I start every day a little buzzed.
Most days.
We don’t always get what we like.
I am okay with that.
The days I don’t make me appreciate the days I do.
When I consume coffee I contemplate.
And alliterate.
I contemplate the things that are going on in the world.
Things that are happening inside my own part of it.
I think about the BIG TO DO and the little to do’s on it to be done.
Getting up early gives me time to myself, which is time to think.
No TV. No music.
Sometimes no phone.
Just a cup of joe and one of the dogs and if I’m lucky, enough time to watch the sky turn pink over the shallow lake behind the house.
When I think about it, not a bad way to start the day.
It reminds me how lucky I am.
I like being lucky.
Not lucky at brackets, which busted early in the Final Four.
Not lucky in betting on horses, or picking winners.
Not even that lucky in love, though there have been many nights were I have gotten lucky and felt loved.
Best thirty seconds of my life!
I’m more lucky in the big picture sense.
Being born, being alive still, being smart enough to know I’m not all that smart.
All the things to add up to sitting on a sofa, enjoying a cup of coffee and watching another sunrise.
There are a couple thousand people in Little Rock who can’t say that.
Which makes me want to practice gratitude more.
That’s just closer to home.
There are tens of thousands more who can’t say how lucky they are outside of this state.
And we’ll add a few more tonight.
More still outside the borders of the US.
Just unlucky.
It might be weather or cars or bad choices.
A 50/50 shot at not waking up tomorrow for just about anybody.
It’s either going to happen, or the tornado hits and even though you’ve lost it all, you still have the one thing that matters.
Breathe.
Which means you have willpower, and that is the strongest super power I think.
Grit.
I know I’ve said that before, but it bears reminding.
To me most of all.
If you’re going through hell, keep on going, before the devil even knows you’re there.
Wisdom from three chords and the truth.
This is advice I need to remind myself of almost all the time.
Because I know that when all of the things feel unlucky, just focus on where the luck is happening and do more of that.
Sometimes it’s enjoying a coffee and sunrise.
Feeling the majesty of a pink sky gone blue, and though storm clouds are on the horizon, it’s not raining yet.
Time to think. Time to plan. Time to solve.
Time to breathe.
Maybe that’s my lesson of today in my “want it all now” frame of mind.
There’s time.
Just find a moment and enjoy it.
Take a moment, and enjoy it.
Then grab your bootstraps and get after it.
Making luck.
Let’s all make time to get lucky today.

You are eating too much aspirin. It is not good for you.
Coffee is my reason for getting out of bed. For the most part.
Enjoy the solitude and quiet before the rest of the local TZ wakes. Could be the rest of the world is still asleep, you never know, and the news won't tell you the truth so why bother looking.
