In 2003 I closed the gym and sold the driving range.
I didn’t get to keep much money from either of those ventures.
Which is sad, because I had earned some cash from selling screenplays in LA and since I was no longer in Los Angeles, no one was buying.
I started to think about making money.
As in, how I was going to do it.
Which mean ideas.
I had a lot of them.
One of those ideas was creating a line of garden gnomes.
I bought a sample from somewhere, bought silver and gold paint, and painted the gnomes.
The idea was to create a product line, and sell the gnomes as a series.
I think I was using ebay at the time.
It was still an auction site, but had introduced the BUY NOW button.
I took digital pictures on my Sony Camera with a 3.5 inch disc and moved them over to ebay, wrote a story about the gnomes.
And waited.
The idea was to tap into the community of garden gnome lovers, and play off some ideas about solid colored items bringing a certain kind of luck.
But it didn’t work.
I sold a few, I think 5 and that was it.
Which gave me about $20 after fees.
Every try to live off $20 bucks?
It didn’t work. Which was fine. I had a drawer full of scripts nobody bought because the idea didn’t work at the time.
Plus, I learned a little bit about selling and marketing online, which was still brand new at that point. (early stage in first five years)
And it sent me into corporate America where I spent the next decade and a half.
BUT I was early.
Timing is everything.
Now, I could take those same gnomes and put up on Etsy or build a Shopify store, set up an Instagram and Tik Tok account and probably sell hundreds.
In fact, I just might try that if I can dig the old one’s out of storage or go get some new ones.
But the point is, EXPLORE all of your ideas.
Because nobody knows for sure what is going to work.
This morning, for example.
I started thinking about NFT projects.
Specifically, one about gnomes.
But I took out my ten ideas a day notebook and just brainstormed.
Came up with some concepts, outlined how to get the concepts done, and then punched in some research on the old Google machine.
Turns out, GNARLY GNOMES as an NFT concept has been done.
They turned out 10k of the NFT’s and the drop was a success.
Which tells me to get going on the rest of the ideas.
We all watch the same shows, read the same books, and play around with the same ideas.
Yet only a few people act on them.
Those are the real winners, the ones who act, the ones who keep acting.
Because when I stopped making silver gnomes, I left a lot on the table.
Imagine for a moment, what if I would have just sold 1 gnome per week for the past 15 years?
That would be a community of gnome lovers who knew and trusted the product, had demonstrated a willingness to buy AND were primed to buy more.
I know this because I do it in books now.
I write in a genre, find readers, and then give them more books.
When I stray from that formula, the money stops growing and the business suffers.
So if you are in it for the long haul, don’t stop and don’t give up.
There are so many tools at your disposal right now that you can literally build a community around anything.
Sell on Etsy. Sell on ebay. Sell on Amazon.
Try it, and test it, and learn something, and keep going if one thing doesn’t work.
Never ever give up.
