I ran 22+ miles in 110 heat on Saturday
So I’m not thinking as well as I might today
It’s not just the heat, though that is brutal
It is the relentlessness of it
The brain fog is brought on by the constant drain of energy
Because after a long run like that
The body burns hot for hours on end (core temperature increase)
Plus I shed a lot of water
So much so that it’s hard to replace it fast enough
Someone told me to try flat Coke on long runs
Though how I’d keep it cool I’ll have to research
But I don’t like energy gels or guu’s
Which are just some form of sugar in a sticky delivery system
Exactly what Coke is just in liquid form
Sunday though, I had plans to sit inside in the A/C and get some work done
Until 10 sent a text and asked if I could take him to the Rec center to play basketball
I watched him play in a scrimmage on Saturday night after my long run-
It was 96 degrees at 8:00 pm in an Offense vs Defense 9th grade football game
He caught one touchdown pass and spent the rest of the plays blocking a safety
So Saturday night was football, and the early morning text to let me know his Mom was taking him to the batting cages for an hour
And he wondered about basketball at 3 or 4
Which is usually followed by heavy balls (weighted rubber baseballs) work in the front yard for 20 – 30 minutes
I realized or am realizing that keeping up with a fourteen year old is almost as tough on the body
As cranking out 22 miles training to be ready
I don’t think I need more rest, though I tell that to 10 all the time
Rest. Rehydrate. Recover.
I do think I need more training.
Not jut to be ready, but to be ready to keep up with a kid!
I have heard/read about younger siblings getting stronger and faster trying to keep up with their older brothers and sisters
But I just might be one of the unique seniors who got that way trying to maintain relevance to a teen
At least for the next couple of years
Then I think those moments might be further apart and in between
I could see a glimpse of it walking out the game
Where he made sure to be well away from his mother and me until we were out of the gate
And I got the “Shh, don’t embarrass me” look when I taked about the way he played
Youth is almost as fickle as my legs the day after a hot run
Speaking of treats:
I did a MASSIVE SCI FI BIG BOXSET that I set up on Friday for a BIG BUNDLE of Sci Fi Novels (and while the response wasn’t huge, I did get some appreciation for it)
And there is no way I’m not going to make the same offer to you, because I’ve been writing for years, and day in, day out, I have a big output of work, so I’m going to share it.
I’ve built a BIG BOXSET GIANT BUNDLE OF MYSTERY BOOKS that includes all these:
Mysteries
A Pint of Problems
A Fifth of Trouble
A Shot of Revenge
A Double Shot of Revenge
Red Tide Retired
ILL Intent

High Tide Homicide

Lemon Squeeze
Pushing Luck

AND you can 100% pick them up individually to add to your collection.
They’re only $1.00 - $2.99 each, so it would cost about $75 or more to get them.
OR you can pick up the BIG BOXSET MYSTERY BUNDLE and get all of them for only $20, the same price I put out the sci fi bundle for:
Why am I doing this?
Cleaning up and clearing up and it’s a great deal for you.
Because if you saw the newsletter a few weeks ago, I lost some files (a huge amount of work) and even though it’s a long road to recover them, I’ve got a few books almost done and ready to come out including;
SOMETHING FISHY (Gumbo Adventures)
and
LEMON HAZE (a mystery)
and
MORE. Much More.
So this BIG BUNDLE BOXSET offer is for a very limited time, and then next week, I’ll send a link to the Youtube channel where you can listen to mysteries free and/or pick these books up one by one.
So don’t wait.

“But I just might be one of the unique seniors who got that way trying to maintain relevance to a teen”- how old are you again? I don’t think you quite qualify as a senior yet. But keep it up and you might be able to be a fit grandparent/senior some day.
