It's 9AM
Today is a good day to take a chance
The kind that starts off holding shortbread or butter cookies from a big box store.
But that’s just the first chapter.
In my house growing up, those tins became treasure chests.
They held sewing kits.
Or polished rocks my dad tumbled out in the garage.
The tin didn’t stay what it was originally manufactured to be.
It took a chance on a second act.
And a third.
We should all be a little more like that tin.
I think about the punch-drunk decisions I’ve made in my own life.
Deciding to run a 100-mile race.
Deciding to kayak the length of the Mississippi River.
Starting a small business publishing books.
Rehabbing houses.
Doing things most people called stupid.
Or impossible.
I almost drowned.
I almost went under in business.
More than once.
But I took the chance.
I hear the excuses all the time.
“I can’t start a new business online because I might fail.”
“What if people watch me fail?”
Here is the truth.
People are too wrapped up in their own petty dramas to care.
The pack mind will always work hard to bring you down.
They get tiny pleasures from being critics.
Imagine some editor sitting on a couch criticizing Jack London while Mr. London was out riding a sled across the Arctic.
Opinions aren’t the laws of physics.
They aren’t gravity.
You have to ignore the crowd and try something new.
Because you could be the exception.
Maybe it’s baking a Coke Cake using a box of chocolate mix and a can of soda.
Maybe it’s starting a cooking channel to share your Grandma’s secret recipes.
Or maybe it’s jumping down a rabbit hole to learn about Robert Johnson and the Delta blues.
The world is full of chances waiting to be taken.
Like spotting red cars on the road, opportunity is everywhere once you train your brain to focus on it.
You have a whole year ahead of you to wash up an old goal, spit shine it, and trot it out again.
Or try something completely new.
Take the swing.
Step out of the routine.
