You’ve got time, he said.
He said it a lot.
Reminding me that even though I’ve hit a “certain age”
I’ve still got half a life left.
50 years to publish.
50 years to create videos and move into movies/TV.
50 years to build houses, and build a business.
Which got me thinking about people who left us this week.
Two grand old men who hit the century mark.
2 years shy for one, but once you go over 90, there’s a lot of “gimme”
We’ll spot Charlie Munger two years just for his sage financial advice.
Which basically boils down to…
Live a simple life and invest money into a simple stock portfolio that is made up of companies you use every day.
What kind of toothpaste do you buy?
Use the Google to find the company that owns it, and buy their stock.
Drink Coke?
Same thing.
The idea being that the average consumer buys the same things over and over again, year after year, and if you invest now for 50 years from now, the stock market will reward you.
I’ve seen it.
I’ve lived it.
Not quite to the level of success that Munger or his more name known partner Warren Buffett have.
But I missed out because I skipped their advice for awhile.
I was going for big at bats.
Save up, buy a house to rehab, flip and get a big check.
Except the returns, once you do all the numbers, might have been the same.
Maybe.
It’s tough to use the rear view mirror sometimes.
The What if’s pile up if you do.
Better to say, I lived it, I learned it and this is how it should be going forward.
Like what to do for the next fifty years.
I know that for twenty of those, I’ll be “retired.”
Still writing, I hope, still publishing, I hope.
But there’s so much time to fit more of what I want to do in.
Think about what you could fit in during your next ten, fifteen, twenty years.
The list is long, and though the time feels like it’s going fast, there are minutes, moments and hours piled upon hours to finish it all.
Learn banjo. Get better at Spanish. Hike to Everest Base Camp. (not the mountain, I’m actually fond of my toes.)
Rail cruise America. Great American road trip. Bike cross country. Run across the country.
Buy land in the middle of nowhere in the Southwest and spend a month watching the stars from the top of an RV.
Learn how to consolidate investors into real estate speculation to deliver an annualized return of 12% using modern style home template for starter home housing shortage.
Grow The Pine Bluff Project.
In a decade, teach my grandkids to fish, to camp, to build bonfires and roast weenies, to give Cokes to workers on hot summer days.
There’s a lot more to do.
Print books on Barnes and Noble. All 104 titles on Kobo and in a dozen other spots, Smashwords, and libraries.
Everything old on Google Play. Everything old into human narrated audiobooks and on all audio platforms.
Get the podcast going on Spotify. Grow Youtube.
So much to do, and though I always FEEL like there is so little time…
I’m wrong.
I’ve got a lot to do and fifty years to get it done.
Stay healthy. Drink water. Eat beef. Exercise.
And practice saying thank you. A lot.
Thank you.
