I wish we were…

As invested in the success of a city as we are in football teams.

It is hard though.

Pine Bluff is not going to the play offs.

Cairo IL ain’t heading to the Super Bowl.

The Beach Boys crooned be true to your school, but nobody talks about my hometown.

Except Morgan Wallen and Bruce Springsteen.

And maybe Alicia Keys talking with Jay Z about the city that never sleeps.

Proof that there is some pride somewhere.

Just not plastered on television with body paint for the world to see.

Then again PB isn’t as interesting as a missed field goal or a dumb coaching call in the final two minutes.

Not yet.

But wait til I get done with her.

I woke up this morning to a cold rain falling and weather men chicken little-ing it for ice.

The weatherwomen did too.

I guess they didn’t want to feel left out.

These same weather person’s were practicing wedding night speeches last week.

Predicting six inches overnight.

Snow you dirty birds.

Get your minds out of the gutter.

Despite the lack of snow or ice this morning, a lot of motivation fell.

Right into my lap.

Now we both know motivation will do nothing for the muse, and inspiration is the key to just one thing.

Discipline.

Use that key to turn on the productivity machine and get going.

But the above mentioned chicken little prognosticators have done another thing.

Scared the schools.

Some are starting late.

Some are starting not at all.

Guess which camp 10 falls in.

So I get a bored pre-teen as a buddy today asking the age old question…

“Can we do something?”

Hint: Dishes or sweeping are not acceptable answers.

Neither is, let me finish this.

As he pointed out, I’m always trying to finish something.

And he’s right.

There is a long list of things to finish and work on, and weather or schools can’t interfere with those action items.

Except…

I’ve got time.

Sure, I want to be done with some of it today, and don’t want to push off a lot until tomorrow and waking up with energy and verve is a good way to “GET AFTER IT.”

But…

I’m about a year away from that pre-teen not wanting to do anything with me.

The eye rolls are starting, the snorts, the armpit stink.

All signs of getting a little bit older and entering that phase where you know everything and nobody else knows nothing and the world is just sooo… ugh bruh.

I keep waiting to grow out of mine, so keep your fingers crossed!

So if I get stuck inside a house with the kid and he asks me to go set up the net in the garage, I probably y will.

Probably will make him lunch when he asks and probably will play Farkle if he brings it up.

I might even venture into his room to watch him play Madden, even though he puts the friends from school Group Chat on Mute so I don’t hear a bunch of squeky voices practicing their sailor talk.

Salty.

And I’ll probably keep pushing off things I need to do so I get those few extra moments for as long as I can,

Until the phrase changes from “Let’s do Something,” to “Fine,” or “Nothing,” or “Whatever.”

And when it does, the long list of things to do will still exist.

Starting with town mascots and underdog stories and reasons for people to cheer.

So they wake up motivated every day.
