It's 9AM
I might not get a cake today.
It’s still up in the air.
I did get a “treat yourself” link to the gas station up the street that sent me a donut or a cookie for my birthday.
And some well wishes on Facebook from friends I hear from this time of year.
Or on their birthdays.
As for “let me eat cake” I’m in the wait and see category.
Mamaw made cakes for every kid and grandkid.
Their favorite kind.
Papaw’s favorite cake wasn’t cake at all.
It was pecan pie.
Made with pecans they picked up in their yard.
My Dad liked vanilla cake with chocolate frosting.
My cousin liked carrot cake with cream cheese frosting.
My brother liked German Chocolate with German chocolate frosting.
And me, I liked ‘em all.
My sweet tooth was dangerous.
Could still be, if I let it.
Cherry cheesecake.
Dump cake.
Coconut Pineapple.
Strawberry, my aunt’s favorite.
Made in Bundt pans or sheets or 9 x 9 boxes.
My uncle liked cake without frosting, which wasn’t my favorite, but she would boil up a sugar glaze to pour over everyone else’s.
Coffee cake. Rum Cake.
Different ways with different toppings but all for the same reason.
A celebration.
Just one of her little ways of letting us know that she was glad we were here.
In her life.
And enjoying slices together, standing in her kitchen, while the adults sat at the table and the kids hovered at the counters.
A family way of saying the same thing.
Glad you’re here.
