It's 9AM
It’s called The Short Game.
A clever title, because it’s about kids playing golf.
PGA level, or the under ten year old version of it.
A show on Netflix about a group of 7 and 8 year old’s vying for a championship.
What struck me about the kid who became number one, about all of them really was the work ethic.
These kids played golf every day.
And the one who ended up winning, whose name you might know in a decade or so if he sticks with it, had schedule.
Personal trainer at 7.
School from 8 – 2.
Golf from 2 – 5.
And nutrition.
Plus time to be a kid.
Daily.
He put in the work.
And it paid off.
Champion at 6.
Champion at 7.
More on the horizon.
To me, it was the daily that gave him the results he wanted.
And golf is notoriously fickle.
We joke about football being a game of inches, but the dimpled white ball can literally roll past a hole, lip it and spin off in the opposite direction.
Knocking you down the list and out of contention.
Maybe that’s why so many people like sports so much.
It is a lot of luck, combined with a ton of effort, mixed with some skill and stirred with discipline.
Which is always funny to me.
The more you work at it, the more skill you get, and the more luck you seem to have.
I explained this to #10 about D1 baseball.
There are about 50 D1 schools in America, and each program gets 10 kids on their squad.
Roughly. You have some pine riders, and walk on’s and a few extra players so that the team numbers close to thirty, but from each incoming class you get 10 Dudes.
I told him you might be the stud in your high school, and get to a college and thanks to the transfer portal and recruiting, you are now on a team of studs, and the older guys have been doing it longer.
Experience equals more time at bats, more of everything.
They are more better.
I think I said Mo Better.
Every one of those 500 kids is putting in the work, which is how they rise up.
They may get lucky and get a scout who is a fan, who tells a coach, and gets them in a top tier program.
They may have parents who can buy lessons, and gear and time to help them along the way.
Or, they could be a kid from Dominican Republic playing on a dirt street with a broom stick, no shoes and a ball made out of rubber bands, but he’s doing it every day for eight hours or more.
The key to all those kids, from the putting green to the diamond, to the football field and sitting courtside on the bench.
The key to almost anything, really.
That one four letter word we talk about a lot.
I think he gets it.
Especially since we had our FALL BALL team meeting last night and the coaches said the word more than once.
We have to work hard.
We’ve got a lot of work to do.
Put in the work and we win innings, win innings and we win games.
We’re going to work at it.
The same thing the 7 year old champion said about winning.
If I put in the work, I get the results.
Go watch it if you can, it’s really well done.
