I got a new boss again today.
This is my fourth in a year.
The others aren’t quitting.
That’s just Amazon back filling open roles.
All of which I’ve applied for.
All of which I’m over qualified for.
And all of which I have just one thing holding me back.
A number.
Because boss number for is twenty five.
Four new bosses in twelve months all under the age of thirty.
He stopped by to introduce himself.
The first words out of his mouth were about violations and writing people up.
That he had permission from HR and they were going to tighten up the ship.
He said he didn’t catch me doing anything, that I just needed to be aware.
I laughed.
It probable came out like a snort of derision, but that’s why I don’t play poker.
I’m easy to read.
Then he made an excuse about having to introduce himself to everyone else and skeedaddled.
I muttered and moaned to myself about the state of the world for a bit.
Releasing my inner curmudgeon.
Then I remembered that I too was once a very young new boss.
I very desperately wanted to impress the men in charge so I took charge and worked hard.
And at the end of the year, I got my thirty cent per hour raise.
Youth. So much to prove and so much to lose.
Amazon does not offer leadership training or classes or even workshops.
They do offer a lot of skillset building when it comes to reports and how to read them.
If the cell clicks red, that means your “worker” isn’t meeting expectation and you have to go talk to them.
Expectation is staying busy and no idle time.
Literally, the manager gets a report if you go to the restroom for more than five minutes and someone stops by where you are to check.
Maybe that’s why they don’t do leadership training.
There’s no leading involved.
I remember the men and women who inspired me to do my best, and not a single one ever mentioned a rip or a write up.
They asked simple questions.
Here’s the objective. Do you have what you need?
How can I help?
I think about the training I’ve went through and realize that the best leaders really just share a vision.
Then get the hell out of the way and let the managers sort it all out by making sure the best people are on board to reach the vision.
And helping others who don’t want to reach it go find what they want to do.
At twenty five or eight or three, it’s hard to even know what you want to do.
Especially in a company that has to evolve to meet an ever changing world.
Fast.
The fallback is micro management, which can be documented on a report.
It’s hard to document a vision.
But it’s easy to tell when there is a lack thereof.
