You should be a teacher, she said.
I couldn’t tell if she was being sarcastic.
It was her tone, and general look on her face.
Not filled with wonder for the topic I was expounding upon.
More like on the annoyed side of bored.
A question that makes a man wonder if he should shut up.
So I did.
Except inside my head.
Where I kept thinking about teaching.
Wondering if I knew enough to make a go of it.
Not teaching in school, which I could do easy enough.
Sure, it’s tough and underpaid and half the time you’re disappointed at the way most kids are being raised.
But…
There’s the one kid you where you make a difference, and maybe that’s a reward in and of itself.
I was thinking about teaching as a course.
Lining up what I know about indie publishing, what I’ve shared in “how to” books in the past that got good reviews.
Ways to make more money doing it.
I’ve written a hundred articles about it that have garnered good reviews.
Sure, there are party poopers and naysayers at every corner, but one of the things I have learned and would teach is this…
Most of the people who line up to complain aren’t doing anything but.
Meaning, they aren’t building business or courses or coaching or trying…
Maybe they failed to heed the Jedi Master Yoda when he said there is no try, only do.
Or maybe they heard do and it doubled up into double do do, and that’s what they decided was their gift.
And they must share it with the world.
I look at it like this.
When you try to GET SHIT DONE you GET SHIT ON.
That’s how you know it’s working.
But it is also the reason a lot of people, yours truly included, don’t try as much.
Even when it seems they are trying a lot.
The simple fact is, I haven’t put out a course for the aggravation/time factor.
Although I could teach a crop of new writers a roadmap to decent success.
Especially if they don’t have to fight Amazon for it.
In the same vein of fact, I have a lot of writing to be done, and a lot of shooting to be done, and a few project management tasks to be done.
Daily.
Part of GSD, (Getting Sh!t Done) is making it easier for folks to find what they like.
When people find what they like, and it’s easy, they do more of it.
In theory.
Hence, the links only newsletter for folks who just want the books without the nostalgic musings of It’s 9AM.
For my GSD part, it takes less than five minutes to put together, maybe seven because I’ll still pop out a short note.
For folks who like It’s 9AM, one I appreciate the feedback telling me so.
I like it too, so I don’t want to stop, even though I want it to grow and turn into something bigger. We have a big free subscriber base, but I haven’t hit the formula for turning it into something else.
Yet.
Someone else will have to teach me that.
Square went down yesterday, so I got several emails about being able to grab the next in series: I’ve checked the links for today and it looks like everything is working.
