The way Seth Godin explained it was…
You only need 1000 True Fans to succeed at a business.
And I guess he was right.
1000 Fans who buy 1 book per month comes out to roughly $2000 a month, which is 24k a year.
Not a great living, but not bad either.
And that’s on a 2.99 cent book.
Those same fans might buy more, because he was thinking about pricing in the $10 and $49 range.
1000 True Fans who pay you $49 a month would make you wealthy.
Hell, if they paid $10 a month, you’d be doing pretty good.
It all sounds so simple.
Find 1000 people who love what you do and want to support your doing it.
And find a way to keep making more things for them.
After all, it’s just a couple of bucks.
Except…
He forgot to mention the hard part.
Find 1000 fans.
I’ve got 5000 people who read It’s 9AM every single day.
I’ve got 10k people who subscribed, but not everyone opens or reads every one.
Of those 5k, you might think 1000 would buy a book or upgrade or something.
But they don’t.
They like the work, they like reading the free stuff, but they aren’t “FANS.”
The challenge to me, as it has been since I started this author journey, is how do I make something people want to pay for?
Be it book or boxset or daily newsletter.
Or audiobook on Youtube or whatever it might be.
The challenge of it excites me and the success of it eludes me.
I met someone from Pine Bluff yesterday.
She left six years after I did, and the first thing she said about it was, “it’s changed.”
It’s the crime, the number one thing people talk about.
She said they moved after she got robbed/mugged the third time in a Wal Mart parking lot.
Some kid with a gun coming up and taking her purse.
All hear say, of course, but I’ve heard it enough to know that it is more common than the news shares.
A mugging doesn’t really excite the populace like a good old fashioned shooting.
Young kids high nooning it in apartment complex parking lots just to prove who is the better Billy the Kid.
I pointed out how they’re trying to make changes, that the city is working toward something, but she reminded me that the city started the same thing in 98.
And 08.
And 12, 14, and now the GoForward initiative since 18.
Trying.
A whole lot of trying.
I guess the success of it eludes them too.
Which is not to say they shouldn’t try.
It’s just that there are no easy answers when it comes to some problems.
Maybe no easy answers when it comes to a lot of problems.
All the same, if 1000 people in Pine Bluff or anywhere made a conscious decision to make a difference, and then ACTED on it, something might change.
1000 people going to support a small business every week.
1000 people speaking to youth and offering opportunities.
1000 people picking up trash, or painting old houses, mowing abandoned lots.
I think that would make a huge difference.
Just like 1000 fans would make a huge difference in my small publishing business.
I can’t wait to get there.
