Ask better questions.
Not just who.
But what, why and how.
These are good starts.
Only the start though.
I’m working with some AI.
The artificial intelligence demands a better question.
Not just a simple dumbed down request.
Because it has access to the world at the tip of it’s finger.
Yet it’s still only a victim of it’s algorithm and the dumb questions people can ask.
What I’m learning is it’s been asked before.
All the dumb ones.
How can I lose weight?
How can I get rich?
How can I get laid?
You would be surprised at just how uncomplicated people are when it comes down to it.
Or maybe you wouldn’t be surprised at how easy the answer to simple questions can be.
If you are rich, and fit, you might get laid more.
But will it mean anything?
As someone who has been one and two and had it work to my advantage to three for a decade of being single, I can tell you, it wasn’t the meaningless beasts with two backs I remember most of all.
Though I do remember a lot of it.
It was the feelings evoked by a good conversation. (which often led to mattress dancing, even if it was sometimes in the backseat.)
Connections.
Which is what we all crave, even when we ask simple questions.
How can I lose weight?
(I want to be a fit example for my kids and make people like/respect me more)
How can I get rich?
(I want money because people respect money or I can use it to buy things to fill a void in my life)
How can I get laid?
(I crave a physical connection or something that will fill a void. In more ways than one.)
The robot can’t answer those questions, even with all the information in the world at the click of a search button.
This is why we need better questions.
Better questions lead to better answers.
Better answers can solve more problems.
Or at least drive in the same direction as to solve them.
Someone pointed out that if I acted on my immigration plan to bring ten thousand people across the border and set them up in a dying Delta town that the answer would create more questions.
What about associated crime?
What about the bill? (who is footing it?)
More people paying more taxes is a good thing, except those people need jobs, and public transportation until they can buy cars, and register and sigh…
The list of all the things that could go wrong was as long as my Johnson after a great conversation.
And almost as right.
More than right.
Because they were good questions.
Questions that I don’t know if an AI can answer.
Would bringing in a busload of El Salvadorian’s increase the risk of M-13 showing up to sell coke and meth and whatever else?
I mean, I wrote about how the crime wave in Pine Bluff started in the early 90’s when California enacted the third strike law and a bunch of two time felons were exported back to Aunties and Grandma’s into a city that just wasn’t prepared to deal with them.
Add to that a shifting attitude toward the police force, growing awareness of police brutality, and generation after generation of high school grads absconding to greener pastures for more green.
Would bringing in busloads of immigrants just be asking for trouble?
The AI can’t say.
Despite all the literature it has at its disposal. Psychological papers, and crime stats and public policy studies.
The robot can’t answer that question.
Not yet.
Because it’s a tough one.
And not the only tough one.
There are others still.
How do we solve homelessness when money thrown at or toward the problem hasn’t solved it yet?
Or the ever present hunger issue.
It’s been forty years since I saw my first Arkansas Foodbank commercial begging to help people eat in a state that 90% of the constituents are obese.
How can we be so big and hungry and so damn poor at the same time?!?
Answer me that, robot.
How can we still have hunger when Arkansas hosts the Walton’s, The Tyson’s and JB Hunt?
Hell, Riceland foods out of Stuttgart AR made a billion dollars in profit selling rice from the state to China and other countries last year.
But money can’t solve the hunger issue, because it’s a people issue, not one of providing food or buying things.
No one would go hungry if they would learn to grow potatoes, tomatoes, and go fishing.
It might help them save money to get rich, and eat better to get thin, which might help them with the third most asked question.
AI problems.
I don’t think we’re ready for the answers it’s going to provide.
But I can’t wait to see what it says!
