I listen to music while I write.
And while I clean house, or do yard work.
I genre hop like a mad jackrabbit.
Every now and then a song touches my soul.
I’m a Chris Stapleton fan.
And he has a song about his dog, Maggie.
Can you tell me why every time it comes on, I get misty eyed?
If you’re a dog lover, then you know.
Unadulterated and unconditional love.
I love cats too.
I had one that lived for twenty years, and I sat in the bathroom and lost it when he died.
Zen.
I was working at KATV as a cameraman one night, and after the ten o’clock newscast I would take JFK BLVD from downtown all the way up to my house in Park Hill.
There is an overpass in North Little Rock that carries you over the train tracks and I had the windows down, and the music up as I crested the hill.
Not speeding though, cause John Law liked to sit in a dry cleaner’s parking lot a block past the red light at the bottom of the overpass and gun you.
Sneaky blues.
I cruised over the crest and saw something moving in the pale streetlight.
Maybe a bag, maybe trash.
Or maybe an injured animal, I thought as I got closer.
Nope.
It was a kitten, squirming in the road.
I stopped, opened my door and reached out to grab him.
Lifted him up and put him in the backseat floorboard and cruised home.
Then I had to tell my wife.
She was a cat person, so it was really a no-brainer.
“Hey, I found this stray in the middle of the road and saved his life.”
It was love at first sight, and a good fit with her other cat, Ariel, who hated me.
Zen didn’t.
Maybe he knew I saved him. Maybe he could just tell I loved kitties and doggies.
He would sit in my lap while I wrote my first novel.
And go with us to California, and come back when we moved home.
My ex got the cat in the divorce, but I still got to visit when I picked up the kids or dropped them off.
When my daughter told me he was gone, I was heartbroken.
He’d been in my life longer than she was.
And I didn’t get to say good bye.
Now we have Gus.
I’m not his favorite, though we spend most days together as he supervises the writing, the work, and the walks.
Then his Momma comes home and I am forgotten!
Dogs and cats.
No wonder it’s so easy to hear a good song about one and let it into your heart.
Cause I think that’s where they live.
