I’m reading an EMP thriller right now.
End of the world caused by a hack on the power grid, complicated by an atmospheric nuke.
There is a whole subgenre of that post apoc category, and combined with some analysis, feels like it could happen any day.
Unless cooler heads prevail.
I also read THE HUSTLE’s free newsletter every day. (You should too, if you like snippets of info on a variety of topics)
Which highlights a lot of good things going on in the world right now.
Which tend to outweigh the bad, but it’s easier to focus on the bad.
Because you can plan for bad.
Prepare for it.
How do you prepare for good times?
Part of my warrior in the garden philosophy is to be ready for both.
It’s not easy.
Keeping a month’s worth of meals in the pantry gets me scoffed at and smart remarks about investing for the future when there are mason jars of dry beans on the back of the bottom shelf.
How can you do both?
How can you balance that in your mind?
To which I say, I don’t know.
Do I think the world is going to hell in a handbasket?
Not really.
Do I think there will be some sort of upheaval in the next decade?
Probably.
But there have always been upheavals every decade or twenty years.
Hippies started the cultural revolution before they become yuppies to create the consumer market.
A different kind of revolution than the violent overthrow of the government, but one that was far more effective.
Because that revolution exported American culture across the glove and propped up the legend of the Dream.
The land of opportunity.
It is also one of the reasons so many third world nations don’t like us.
I happen to think that the next big distraction might be a Luddite war against AI and corporate use of humanoid robots.
Right now, wars are being fought by tiny drones, and over the next five years, every Army will have a Robot Brigade.
Don’t think of the droids from Star Wars, think of those robot dogs with helicopter mini-guns attached, or tiny Skid Steers loaded up with SAMS and RPG’s.
The prediction of a billion humanoid robots entering the work force in the next decade doesn’t include non-humanoid robots doing the work we don’t want to do.
And when those robot droids start taking jobs, people are going to react.
Some will react badly, and maybe even violently.
Because the powers that be now do not understand what or where the power will be a decade from now.
Look back at the Summer of Love, and predict how it would become the Fall of Making Money.
Make love not war protesters became the greed is good generation.
Which tracks.
Because what if you were greedy about making love, instead of using war to line the pockets of investors?
I don’t know if the kids who grew up on tech and in the age of the internet will be as bothered about a robot workforce-
But..
It seems like there is a big trend toward going back to basics, and learning homesteading skills, and becoming more self reliant.
Backyard gardens and chicken coops.
Which would be a good way to be ready for anything.
Even a couple of fiction books writing about it.
