Sometimes I do something cool
And it gets zero traction.
But for some reason, no one sees it.
I’ve done it with stories.
With audiobooks.
With short stories given away for free.
And articles packed with advice.
All to see what works.
What people want to see more of and what I can write more about.
Because I’m not a business man.
I am the business, man.
Apologies to Jay Z.
And in business, you do more of what works, and less of what doesn’t.
Like selling corn at McDonalds as a side dish.
Doesn’t have quite the same ring as burgers and fries.
But Ronald likes to experiment.
And experimenting can be fun.
Like TOUCHED.
I had an idea about a guy on the run from the mob. Where could he hide?
And then it hit me.
What if he hid out as the new preacher in a tiny town? A case of mistaken identity or stolen identity where he wants to keep a low profile, but he’s also kind of a bad guy.
It got good reviews when it was up on Amazon and didn’t sell much.
It could be because Amazon doesn’t do a good job of pushing one off titles.
It could because I’m not good enough yet to be a one off selling author.
Or the story could just be quirky enough that it fits between the niches and not quite in one, so readers are left wondering.
Which doesn’t work for advertising the title on Amazon.
So for me at least, it’s back to the drawing board.
Another day, another story, another moment spent searching for what works.
Someone shared the advice, just write what you like, and people will find it.
But that is akin to throwing paint at the wall and hoping to be the next Jackson Pollack.
And though I spend a lot of time filled with hope for building a better world.
Mine a big part of it.
I don’t consider hope a viable plan.
The best plan is packed with action.
Actions.
Items that lead to something.
Stepping stones that turn Touched and Westerns and more into SMART goals.
Like Youtube.
The idea was to put up all books as free audiobooks.
Good intention on a good experiment.
But there’s a disconnect and only a few people are subscribing.
The goal is a number, and it’s easy to measure.
Go click SUBSCRIBE for more free audio books and stories.
But it’s like that with every platform where you’re trying to grow.
Tik Tok. Clapper. Instagram. Facebook. Twitter. LinkedIn.
There is a good business use for each of them and a learning curve to what reaches the most people.
Cat videos.
America has the knowledge of the world in the palm of their hands and the number one thing we watch?
Cats.
We are 4000 years from the Egyptians and still fascinated by felines.
I am just as guilty of this as anyone.
I think that might have to make it into Release the Cats of War, or some variation of it.
When that’s done, I’ve got a plan to work for the day.
Eat beef.
Work out.
Run.
Write.
And top of the list?
Figure It Out.
Then Get After It.
The It is different most days, but the number one job of business and life and the guaranteed pursuit of happiness is finding out what IT is and doing more of it.
That’s what makes magic happen.
And today, I feel like casting a spell.
Speaking of experiments, go look at this cover and tell me if you like it
