I have an idea, she said.
I’m all ears.
I love ideas.
I have hundreds of them.
Novels. TV Shows.
Food Trucks. Real Estate Deals.
Phone Apps. Youtube Channels.
Ideas are easy, especially if you practice brainstorming.
Her idea was more pragmatic.
Practical even.
Let’s meet after work on Thursday at Flyway.
It was a good idea.
Is a good idea.
Not something pie in the sky that I won’t have time to work on.
Just an old fashioned “Let’s sit down” and talk about your day kind of moment.
Because she does talk about her day.
Administrating a hospital is no easy task.
Wrangling employees, policy, insurance and the ick that comes with it.
Plus corporate politics as she moves upward.
Something that happens no matter where you work.
My “boss” is 23.
It is very difficult for me to take work advice from him.
Nigh on impossible.
He opens his mouth and I want to stick a pacifier in it.
His boss is 28.
They are kings of their world, and have surrounded themselves with like minded and like aged men and women.
They spout off about inclusiveness and diversity, but do not consider including older men like me.
It’s okay.
I saw the leaked memo, and they are only following company policy.
Which is why so many men start their own businesses after the age of 40.
Maybe they’re fed up with all of the above.
The ranks thin the higher you go, and it takes a certain type of personality to succeed.
A certain amount of sucking up, and boldness balanced with toeing the line and longevity.
I had it up to a point, but a better kiss ass pushed me out.
Sometimes I’m glad it happened.
It made me the author I am, the SBO I am.
It gave me the chance to get educated on media, and tactics and strategies.
Sometimes I miss it.
I worked with a lightning in a bottle kind of crew, people I still think about almost daily.
People who taught me lessons about life, work, the military, and success.
A group that showed me that success is in doing the good work, sometimes the work no one sees or knows about, that ends up helping no matter who gets the credit.
An almost group-think mind focused on a mission.
The mission.
Helping.
I wonder if that’s where I get my desire to give back?
To give away words and stories and thoughts and ideas.
To share.
Because maybe that’s the spark someone else needs to make a go of it on their own.
Or maybe it just lets folks know they are not alone in their struggle.
Or maybe proves that there is a bigger idiot out there.
Usually that idiot is in the left lane on the Interstate doing fifty while texting, but in this instance, I mean me.
Still focused on a mission and assuming the role until I am relieved of duty.
At least, that’s the idea.
It’s kinda steampunk and a lotta urban fantasy, but I’ve been watching CARNIVAL ROW on Amazon Prime and enjoying it. Creatures of myth and legend are living in the real world idea.
You might like it too.
At least until REACHER comes out.
I like this book cover, which is close to what I’ve ordered for the SingleWide series as I expand it. What does it make you think of?
I grabbed this free to read this weekend:
