It's 9AM
The skies were green.
I think we're in trouble, I said.
We were in the middle of a delta cotton field somewhere north of Vicksburg and a wall cloud to the west of us was a clue.
So were the string of cars parked on the shoulder of the two lane blacktop.
Windows down.
Cameras out.
Storm chasing.
All aimed at the clouds and the swirling raindrops twisting in the yellow green sky.
Not twirling.
Not yet.
Should we pull over she asked.
Huddling in a ditch was an option.
Not yet I said.
But it didn’t look good.
I was worried.
The roads were covered with water, slick.
The winds came from one direction, then the other, crossing the road, back and forth.
Rocking the Baseball Adventure Vehicle.
The Van.
The blacktop ran beside the big Muddy River, parallel for miles.
It was on the other side of the cotton fields.
Backroad highways cutting over toward Greenville MS and eventually AR.
Nothing between us and home but some miles and bad weather.
And nerves.
Lots of nerves.
I wasn’t worried though.
There was a lot of field between us and the storm, and no matter which way it turned or twirled, we could dodge it.
The other two were worried.
I could tell because electronics went down and they were watching too.
Wondering what we would do.
What would happen.
And after thirty tense minutes…
It was dark and we wouldn’t see it until it was too late.
And we were out of it.
Just rain, hard and steady, sometimes sideways.
Plus flooding.
Up by Greenville, the fields looked like lakes, black water all the way up to the edge of the highways, reflected in the headlights.
We crossed the Bridge under the glare of casino lights and into Arkansas.
The weather was gone.
Just shiny roads all the way home, a highway I’d driven a hundred times or more.
Not quite clear skies and smooth sailing… or driving.
They say “any port in a storm” but I thought of one much a pro pos.
Any storm you can walk away from.
