We’re not there yet.
Almost though.
If you’ve been with me awhile, you know I think some applications of AI are going to make life more interesting over the next decade.
So I dig into it.
I research it.
I play with it.
And I wonder things.
Like the horror script I wrote down based on an article I read about NEO.
NEO is a brand new humanoid robot that will be invading our shores and homes once the price point reaches a certain level.
It will compete with Optimus and the other three names I can’t remember at the moment.
Home assistants. Cleaners. Workers.
Companions.
Which is how they’re pitching Neo.
An AI connected fully articulated all purpose home companion.
Which is a good thing.
A great thing.
Except…
It’s not quite the truth.
Because Neo isn’t independent.
Not quite.
A $3 - $4 an hour worker in a third world country is connected to Neo, and operating it via remote.
For now.
It’s cheaper than building an autonomous until they can be produced at scale.
The same thing is happening with some more advanced “robots” working in warehouses.
They can “do the work” so long as a worker in a VR environment can control them.
On the one hand, it’s really cool.
Can you imagine all the work games people could play in a VR environment while robots perform the actual work somewhere else?
We could fight wars with robots while game chair soldiers answer the Call of Duty.
As for Neo, I had an idea for a horror movie about a VR worker becoming obsessed with the pretty Female Main Character he’s assigned to and chaos ensues.
I assume the code on these robots prevents or tries to prevent all shorts of shenanigans.
The kind of trouble that a good story could get into.
And I bet, based on the track record of tech, that nothing like that could happen in real life.
Because tech doesn’t get messed up or hacked or overwhelmed and locked up and needing a reboot.
But…
I’ve seen videos and talked with people who are at the forefront of robot doctors-
Real doctors operating remote robot arms for surgery.
And it’s pretty common.
Or becoming even more common, especially with nurse shortages and doctor shortages and insurance coverage shortages.
A doctor in Little Rock can perform surgeries in Pine Bluff or Fort Smith or Fayetteville.
At least they will be able to when each of those hospitals get the robot on staff.
And the doctors who know how to use them.
I bet Neo’s will become common too.
With all the inherent risks associated with it.
Humans like to take risks.
We just need a good enough story to tell us it’s worth it.
You have the right to remain magic.
Any spell you use can be used against you.
Fans of fast pace and smart mouths are going to enjoy the Marshal of Magic.
He's got to be fast on the spell because his job is tough.
Taking out witches and warlocks gone bad.
But when he accidentally unleashes twelve demons from a ritual spell, he's sentenced to clean up the mess.
Even if it kills him.
