It's 9AM
Who is really writing the future of us
I watched a nerd talk about the future
It made me shake my head and smile
Because the thing that’s funny is
I watched Revenge of the Nerds when I was a kid
And four decades later, it’s coming true
More than true, nerds aren’t just getting revenge
They’re shaping and writing the future
If you watch an interview with the guy who helped build ChatGPT
There are two things you notice right away
He’s a nerd
He thinks of the world in terms of bits and bytes
And how to make the “game” better
It’s how he thinks
A lot of guys who were “weird” in high school and buried their intelligence in the architecture of computers
End up like that
It’s just a different way of thinking
And often think their way into leadership positions
He got lucky too
He was smart, and had a good idea that got him connected with another nerd who “GETS SHITE DONE”
Elon Musk
And that brain combo built out the non-profit CHATGPT
Then some guys got into the ear of Sam Altman and started talking about money and power and probably girls
I mean, if you saw Revenge of the Nerds, you know jocks spend all their time thinking about sports and nerds spend all their time thinking about sex
So maybe that was part of it
Plus power attracts women
And money attracts women
Ask me how I know
The guy kicked Musk out of the company with a lawsuit, put out a press release that they were going to take the LLM public, and kicked off the AI Race
It pissed Musk off enough that he built a better, smarter and by all metrics a better model
Combined it with his other companies, which helped it grow more
And sparked an even faster race
But…
The nerds have defined the future
Which turned into the end of a lot of life as we know it doomsayers
The end of jobs
The end of commerce (I actually see this now, when I’m watching TV. I stream all the programming I watch and 90% of the commercials are AI generated)
The end of the world
All capped with the caveat “AS WE KNOW IT”
People said the same thing about every advance in technology
I remember reading in an old history book, before the revisionists got hold of it and changed it,
But when Eli Whitney introduced the cotton gin, a lot of people hated it, because it took work (jobs) away from the slaves!
(and probably contributed to the Civil War (old tech vs. new tech))
It’s a good thought exercise to wonder which side you fall on
Old v. new
And what kind of world will the future bring
If either wins
(BTW, history has told us, over and over again, that NEW always wins)
So if you know that NEW is going to win
A future created by nerds
Then the question becomes, how do you live in that world?
There’s also an answer where you don’t have to
Homesteading is always an option
Get twenty chickens to lay eggs, plant a garden, put barrels under every gutter to collect rainwater, put solar panels on your roof
Go as off grid as you can, make your own food, spend your days working on your garden and your power, and fixing your things
Unconnected and in a future all your own
OR something in between (I think this is where most of us fall, because if you have a smart phone, you bought into AI already)
and if the worst happens and it’s another kind of civil war (AI vs. Humans)
Then we’ll stop looking for a nerd for the answer
And let the Revenge of the Jocks save us
