Anyone interested in homesteading?
Like a lot of folks who have way too many interests, I’ve studied.
A lot.
I grew up hunting and fishing for meat, and growing veggies with my grandparents.
I’ve said before I didn’t taste canned vegetables or jelly until I was over 18 and out on my own.
Store bought just doesn’t compare.
My adult hood, as varied as it has been, has given me a background or at least familiarity with:
Building shelter
Growing food
Planning and surviving
And it all brings me to thinking about a topic:
Homesteading
Building or buying a big shelter (home)
Putting in the off grid system (solar, water)
Chopping wood for warmth
Growing food to eat
Raising chickens/ducks for eggs
And spending my days making sure all the systems in place work
Plus
Writing and growing the publishing company which could include content about homesteading
Except
I also have a dream to travel around America, and film it/post it, while I visit:
Route 66
Texas
Grand Canyon
Area 51/ET Hwy
PCH up
The Plains across
And A1A all the way down to Key West
Car camping in a van, waking up to new sunrises and drinking beers to sunsets.
Which makes homesteading hard.
And both make building a publishing company hard, though carrying a mobile hotspot with me on the road, or parking it under a Starlink would make it easier.
It’s a question of picking a path, which I suppose is the question each of us is presented each day.
Routine is the key to disciplined success, but variety is the spice of life.
A dichotomy.
How does one choose?
Is it a coin flip?
I checked the numbers and vanlife and homestead both get roughly the same views, so I can’t use business to make the decision.
I’ve spent time travelling and I’m really good at it, so trekking cross country wouldn’t be a problem.
Neither would building up a base of operations for urban homesteading.
After all, anyone with a lot could do the same with just a little time and elbow grease.
I like to think in ideal worlds and backwards plan from that…
Except
I don’t think anyone should make life changing decisions when going through a heart wrenching time.
But…
Aren’t we almost always going through something?
I mean, we grow up.
That’s a big change.
We recover from this happening or that happening, and maybe a decision would have changed it one way or the other
But who knows for sure.
Because that’s life, right?
You make a choice and live with it, and wonder what might have happened if you made a different choice.
Would life had been different if I didn’t trek West when I was old enough to know better?
Or didn’t head to Africa or Europe when I should have known better?
Of if I didn’t harbor this desire to be a writer/creator?
What if I was happy being something else?
I think that madness lies down that path.
The what if is a dangerous game.
Because I haven’t cracked quantum physics yet, I can’t explore the consequences of my choices.
Neither can you.
You can spend time wondering if you married the right guy or if you should have been different in one way of the other…
But it feels like time wasted.
Energy spent wondering about the might have been…
Might be better spent on action making your choice work.
I know.
I’ve lived it.
The wondering And the realization that I didn’t take action in the right spot.
Which created a reciprocation of inaction that led to this inevitable need for another choice.
Another decision that I might get wrong.
Another regret-
Or maybe another grand adventure.
Maybe a new ever expanding opportunity of choices.
Who knows?
The Universe, surely, but me, I’m stuck with thinking about this plan and that plan and wondering…
Which one is right?
Or in the words of The Clash
Should I stay or should I go?
Which would you choose?
