10 Things you didn’t know about me
I’ve shared a lot over the past few years with you.
If you’ve read the Battlefield Z series, you may know more about me than anyone else on earth.
But there are a few things I haven’t talked about much.
I was having a beer with a guy who said something like, “You’ve had a life, haven’t you.”
I toasted him back and answered, “Haven’t we all.”
It’s true, some live a little different than others.
And God knows I’m different. Have been my whole life.
So I will raise my glass to being a little different. I’m talking to you.
Here are ten things I’ve done before.
I flew to Los Angeles when I was twenty and decided to stay for awhile. I wanted to be in the movies, and thought I could get on 90210. (I did not)
I broke my leg jumping out of an airplane. Technically, it was my 18th jump and the landing was the problem, not the flight. It was before a 100 mile race, and I told them to duct tape my leg and ankle so I could finish. (I did not)
Three weeks out of a cast, I ran a marathon while I still had 3 screws holding my ankle together. (It was a 100 mile race in a place I really wanted to be, and I had to stop after more than 26 miles)
I broke 3 titanium screws through repeated impact and had to have surgery to remove them. It pissed the doctor off.
In the twelve months following the broken leg, I ran and completed 3 races of 100 miles, 6 races of 50, and 2 marathons. It hurt.
I have owned a gym.
I have owned a golf driving range.
I have owned a marketing company for over fifteen years, even while I worked at other companies.
I have started over two hundred novels. I have published 75 so far, with the rest due sometime in the next three years.
I backpacked around Europe for nine weeks to take a class in International Monetary Exchange. I slept on trains, in parks and occasionally a warm bed.
And that’s just a few months of my life.
What are some of the coolest things you’ve done?
What’s the one story you tell everyone?
As a long distance runner, you know mine is the 100 mile races. Somehow I find a way to work it into every new conversation.
“What do you think about the Buc’s this year?”
“Well, I ran a 100 miles near Tampa this one time and…” HA!
“Elon Musk is sending a probe to Mars.”
“I think that’s awesome. I’d sign up for a Martian marathon in space. This one time, I ran 100 miles and…”
“My new baby took his first steps today!”
“That’s great. Call me when he does his first hundo.”
Just kidding. I’m not that bad. Almost.
Most of the time.
Who are we trying to kid?
I probably am that bad.
You’ll just have to weigh which is worse. Free books every time an installment comes out or war stories about trail toes.
Until then though, I’ll try not to mention it.
