It's 9AM
Way back when I worked in the corporate world, we had a simple formula for the times when things weren’t working.
Dial.
When I first started, we were only able to use phones to reach people all across the country.
So the more you dialed, the more chances you had to reach people.
The more chances you had to reach people, the more opportunity you had to ask questions.
And the more questions you asked created more chances for people to go to school or get training.
Simple.
And it all started with a back end formula.
Now it’s called Conversion Rates, and there are so many ways to calculate it, that it’s become almost impossible to predict.
At last estimate, it was close to 1%.
One percent of the people you reach actually take some sort of action.
When we worked it, the number for my team was closer to 10.
But the internet has made ease of everything turn that number into a declining value.
Meaning, you have to reach more people more times just to get them to move some sort of way.
And it doesn’t matter what you offer.
It doesn’t matter how good it is for everyone or if it will change their life, or make them laugh or give them the tingles in their dingly bits.
Only one percent take action.
When I look at the state of the world today, it is no surprise.
I watch people drop litter from their cars, because it’s better to make nature a mess than take five minutes to put trash in a bin.
For them.
One percent goes to pick up litter.
99% bitch about trash on the side of the road.
So what is it that sets the action takers apart?
Maybe it’s passion about something.
If they love it, then they buy it, or do it, or support it.
Which might seem like something that feels true.
But it’s not.
The numbers don’t lie.
Across the board, in every segment and sector and thing that we do, only about one % take action.
On an ad.
On a click.
On volunteering at a local event.
That’s why you get so many offers to join lists, and get lumped in big groups, so that the 1% is a number that can make a difference to a business.
It’s why so many big box stores end up in your neighborhoods and price the mom and pop’s out of business.
Being successful in business means finding a good niche where the 1% can support and help you grow.
And building a big enough name/brand that more people get in the know and that tiny portion of the population gets a little bigger.
