Maybe it’s the weather.
More probably the season.
The shifting of the earth on it’s poles, tilting the North away from the sun.
And thinning the veil between worlds.
If you’ve ready anything about quantum physics and mechanics, you might believe in the possibility of multiple realities.
And if you’ve read the Bible, you might believe in Heaven and Hell, just two other possible worlds people slip into when their energy on this plane turns into something else.
Hell, you don’t even have to read the Bible to believe in things, one way or the other.
Though there’s evidence to suggest that Hell was created by priests and educated types in the middle ages to scare the unwashed masses into paying more for their trip to heaven.
The Catholic Church lost a lot of priests to the black death, and had to refill the ranks with anyone they could take.
Which led to indulgences, men all the way up to the Pope who would take money, land and title in exchange for an elevator trip to the sky.
But there’s also evidence to suggest that we are not alone on this world.
Every day we discover a new species, or a new link to different kinds of species that have been here before us.
Every day we discover more about things we can’t see, things way down below the atom level.
Quarks and sub-quarks and nano atoms.
Things that can exist in two places at the same time.
Things that can exist in two places at once.
Which makes me wonder.
Legends that we think are made up.
Might just be movement from one plane to the next, on some quantum level.
And this is the time of year for it.
Samhain.
A night when the spirits are most active.
Helped by a vibration on the sub molecular level caused by the earth tilting away from the sunlight.
Ghosts.
Last night it was Shannon Glover.
She wasn’t my first girlfriend, but in high school, we were steady and serious.
Until she left for college, and we lost touch.
She was a year older, and if not wiser, at least a little more experienced.
Especially after her first semester.
We had a few dates when she came home to visit, and drifted apart once I left town to get a little wiser myself.
I dreamed about sitting in a waiting room, waiting for a dentist.
There were people in the room who are part of my life now.
Except a woman sitting in a chair in the corner.
Shannon Glover.
Not as I knew her, way back in the when.
But as I imagine she might be now.
Except that I haven’t seen her for three decades.
And I haven’t thought of her since 2009 when I joined Facebook and got a friend request from her older brother.
No one has seen, heard or spoken to her in almost forever.
It makes me wonder why she would pop up in a dream on a 46 degree night ten days before Halloween.
What’s going on at the sub atomic level that sparks the neurons that jump from synapse to synapse to bring up a face from the past.
And give it a face from today?
The spirits are restless.
And so are we.
