It's 9AM
There is supposed to be a formula for success.
Predicated on hard work.
But that is not always the case.
Sometimes hard work is just that.
Hard work.
And there is no reward.
Maybe it’s because the boss is incapable or inept.
The older I get, and the younger they are, the more it seems it is ineptitude.
There is no substitute for “been there, done that.”
Try as I might not to be a grumpkin about it, it slips through.
An ongoing problem with a face like mine.
But I’ve always been a fan of action talks.
And I’ve always been a man who will try something new.
Not afraid to fail is a good way to describe it.
Not afraid to learn.
Plus despite the face and my way is probably better point of view, I’m not afraid to change my mind.
It is inevitable.
Change.
And it is good.
Changing.
Evolving.
Except when formulas aren’t working.
Except when the Yoda inside your head insists there is no try, only do gets it wrong.
I felt it happen yesterday.
Reverting.
Or the feeling of about to.
Because the hard work isn’t working fast enough.
Even as I’m in love with the process, the outcome doesn’t meet the need for the moment.
And there is a low bar for need.
I lined up the rest of the year’s work to complete, and wondered which would help most to get over the bar.
And then it hit me.
There is no formula for luck.
Sure, work and knowledge and preparation can get you ready for luck, and maybe even make more opportunities show up.
But there is an element of it at play.
In job searches and building business, in running long distance and even driving.
Ever catch all the lights on a straight stretch of broad way, the timing just right so it puts you in a flow state?
That’s luck and timing and good work.
Work at keeping the speedometer pegged on the right number to make every light.
Some days are like that, and it feels like the hard work is starting to pay off.
Some days, every light turns red and you feel like you’re out of luck.
There is no balance to it.
Except learning what it feels like on the lucky days.
And working hard to have more of them.
