Ryan Reynolds isn’t fair.
He’s tall.
Handsome.
Funny.
And lucky.
Though a lot of that luck has to do with hard work.
And a good team.
The actor turned investor turned business owner built a good team of business people around him and started a marketing company.
While he was acting.
The goal of that company was to do marketing for:
The actor
The movies the actor was in
The movies he produced
And
Movies his wife acted in
Movies his wife produced and/or directed
And
The businesses he invested in or bought
Aviation Gin
Mint Mobile
Plus others.
He has made a lot of money by buying those businesses (and making those movies).
But what made him more money?
Studying and creating marketing for those businesses.
Then working with a very creative team of writers, directors and concept artists using the power of social media to expand and grow the value of those companies.
Wrexham FC is another great example of what he’s done.
Or doing.
He bought into the team for $2.4 million bucks.
Used his marketing company to create a show around the Football Club for Hulu and an ad campaign to grow their following and name recognition.
Then executed.
The show had to be good.
I mean, Ryan’s funny and the success of Ted Lasso on Apple TV in the US probably helped, but if no one watched it on Hulu, it wouldn’t get a second season renewal.
A flop is a flop.
But good looks and wit and charm, along with an underdog story and a fish out of water story combined to create…
Lightning in a bottle.
By all metrics, the show was a success and so was the FC, moving up from Fifth League to Fourth after a winning season.
It all helped.
Social channels grew, along with sponsorship money, payments to players, payments to advertising to keep growing and expanding the media team to keep the loop going.
All in all, a well executed plan.
Buy a business, grow the business and turn your $2.4M investment into a 10X value.
And when I read it, I see it as a blueprint.
What can be borrowed, lifted or stolen from what this mega-star did for a no name Football Club and used for any business?
Now FC has an advantage.
Soccer (Football) is the most watched sport in the world, and there are hundreds of millions of fans.
It would be no easy feat to take that same formula and apply it to a dying Delta town(s), would it?
Or a Youtube channel about classic cars or a bar b que sauce company or a refrigeration business?
Would it?
Ryan Reynolds is doing it again with Formula 1 Racing, and I’ll be watching to see how it works.
The same business plan is planned to be used.
Buy into an existing but underdog racing team.
Use your media agency to create a series of campaigns around it.
Put it on Hulu (thanks to a sweetheart deal from the success of the first show) and expand/grow the social following for racing.
Basically rinse and repeat.
I think he’ll succeed.
Because he’s lucky.
You know, one of those guys who does 20 hours of work in an 18 hour day kind of lucky.
Do you feel lucky?
