It's 9AM
My parents went there and all I got was a lousy tee shirt.
Ever seen that?
I think every tourist destination had it on a rack.
Hundreds of thousands of parents and grandparents and friends bought it for those who were left at home.
A cruel joke?
A funny joke?
But we love tee shirts!
I wear one every day. They’re sexy when my GF wears one to bed.
Do we really care what they say?
Maybe it’s what it says about us.
When I see someone in a tee shirt that says, “This Is The Way,” I automatically know something about them.
They’re cool as hell.
Or one that says “I solemnly swear I am up to no good.”
That’s my kind of people.
It’s a clue that lets me peek at their personality and know that we could probably talk for hours.
An easy billboard of insight.
When I see a kid wearing an All State Regionals Tee Shirt, I can ask him about his team, how they did, what’s next.
And watch him run off to his mom screaming “Stranger Danger!”
But you get the idea.
Tee shirts are easy short cuts sometimes.
Not just in dressing, but in sparking conversations.
Or depending on the phrase, a warning to avoid you.
I wish there were more shortcuts in life.
I suppose there are more than we are aware of.
I have a friend who wrote a book called SKIP THE LINE.
He says to ignore most of the rules about what you are supposed to do because they are made up rules.
He’s done a lot of things I’d like to do, and more that I plan to do.
Podcast with cool guests. Maybe I’ll make tee shirts.
Would you buy a tee shirt to support a podcast?
He pitched a TV show idea to his bosses at HBO and then went out and filmed it without their permission.
Showed it to somebody (and skipped a lot of people in between), got the show picked up and did that for a few years.
I’ve got a few paperbacks floating around Hollywood on a hunt for Producers, bypassing a lot of agents.
Because there are unwritten “rules” about how that’s supposed to work, AND YET every day, some low level producer is pulling a book she loves out of a slush pile and getting it greenlit.
There are shortcuts in writing more words, but I have to practice those.
I’m not good at it yet. Talk to text, thinking on the fly, translating the pictures in my head to words in my mouth instead of taps on a keyboard.
There are others ways you can hack whatever you want to do.
Take any goal. Has someone done it before?
Buy their book, read their blog and then steal all their tips, techniques and steps they did to reach that goal.
If someone spends 10,000 hours practicing how to do something, you can learn from them.
I like that expression about the mechanic charging $300 for knowing where to hit to fix the engine.
Do you know that one?
If he shows you where to hit, and you can do it, now you’re almost an expert.
If someone shows you how to trade stocks and you can do it, you are, by definition, a stock trader.
Same with running. Same with crafting. Same with just about any thing you want to do in life.
There are shortcuts, tee shirt phrases that you can apply, if you can only know what those phrases mean.
Which lets me know, you can work hard and smart to do just about anything you want to do in life.
It reminds me of someone who asked Elon Musk about Space X.
“Do you know rocket science?”
He smiled and said, “No, but I hire people who do.”
That’s a shortcut, a hack.
Because he, like me, knows one of the secret tee shirt phrases you can commit to your heart.
