Could baseball save America?

I grew up with games in Little League and Babe Ruth, hot summer nights under the lights, chasing foul balls to bring back to the concession stand for a snow cone or a coke.

It's evolved to Travel Ball and NIL deals now but...

I think we're missing a lot of life lessons that could be taught again in the field and at the plate.

Like losing.

You get a K and sure, you don't like the call and the Ump is blind, and yada yada yada BUT...

It should teach you that you have another AB coming up. That everybody is watching your attitude. That it only takes one shot, one good swing to change the momentum of your day, your game. Your mind.

I did a couple of posts about brining baseball back to Pine Bluff, and one of the JP's in Ward 3 got a grant to revamp old Bush Field into a multipurpose park that includes baseball, softball and soccer fields.

Now I wonder if we could get bats and gloves and baseballs donated and take a whole bunch of underprivelaged kids in the most dangerous city in America and teach them baseball to see if they could apply it to life.

I learned a lot from it.

I'm not fast. I'm can't throw far or hit well. Coach would probably sit me in right field and hope we weren't facing the sun.

But it taught me about teamwork. About giving your best effort, even if it's not a top level performance.

It taught me about toughing out tough games when it's hot outside and most important of all, it taught me that there's always time.

Maybe not in this game.

But there are always more games to play. More at bats. More opportunities.

Even when things aren't going well, and the wheels are coming off, there's a chance to turn everything around with every pitch, every play.

Man, if baseball isn't the best metaphor for life, I'm not sure what is.

And it could go a long way to help with a lot of things that we think are wrong in the world right now.

We just have to step up to the plate.
