Every morning I read a couple of things just to get my mind going.
A round up of headlines, if you will.
This gives me perspectives from a couple of different POV’s, because I don’t want to fall into a trap of echo thinking.
That’s when I think one thing that a lot of people agree with, but we’re all wrong because it’s different from a different perspective.
It’s okay to be wrong.
It’s okay to change your mind when you get more facts or when you get a different feeling.
Feelings matter when it comes to opinions, right?
Because if we “feel” something, then it can affect our opinion.
Like today.
I “feel” like never using UPS again.
I saw a company make $91 or $92 Billion in revenue on an expectation of $96 Billion.
Billion.
Since they missed by 4 or 5 billion dollars, their solution was to cut 12,000 jobs.
12,000 people who do not make 4 or 5 billion dollars.
Now some folks may think it’s the Union deal made earlier in the year that caused that miss.
But the fact is, that deal doesn’t go into play until this year.
So it had nothing to do with the miss.
It might have had something to do with Amazon shipping less volume through UPS.
Zon has expanded it’s fleet of trucks to contractors who are cheaper to contract with than UPS.
But the biggest thing that impacted UPS was people.
Us.
You and me.
We spent less from August to December because the news made us feel like we were sliding into a recession.
We bought less from places that shipped less, and those places used UPS.
Or didn’t in this case.
And in the best business sense in the world, the Corporation knows that labor (people) are the biggest company expense.
Cut people, and you cut expense.
Plus, when you cut people, stock prices go up, which gives those Execs who make the cuts bigger bonus opportunities.
It just doesn’t have an impact on the underlying problem, which is people spending less.
Which will continue into this year, thanks to problems with Yemen, problems with gas prices going up in an election year (just like they always do).
My “feelings” are anti-UPS right now.
Though they were anti-Amazon for awhile.
And I suspect they will move to anti-USPS next.
I had to ship a broken bat back to the company for the warranty, and it cost $20.
It made me wish I could make my own bat.
Which…
Maybe I could.
A wood bat, not an aluminum composite, which is what broke.
On a home run, at least.
It cracked, and they’re going to replace it with a new one.
I wonder who is going to deliver it?
