I had an idea.
No big deal, we all have ideas.
Heck, this isn’t even the first Idea I’ve ever had.
I literally have two boxes full of ideas half done.
I think there may even be some ideas in there fleshed out enough to be called novellas.
I could probably spend a year wrapping up the stories molding in those boxes, some printed out in dot matrix, some printed out on a technology gone obsolete.
I’ve got shelves of notebooks full of ideas.
Almost a thousand.
Notebooks, not shelves.
The secret of success is knowing the difference between ideas and action.
Everybody’s got ideas.
Not everybody puts them in action.
But I liked this one idea.
It was a shiny new thing and kept trying to distract me while I worked on my WIP.
I should call it a PIP. A project in process.
Cause it’s more than one book at the moment. It’s planned for six.
Whatever it ends up being, it needed my attention.
Except this idea.
Like a sprite on the edge of my vision.
Like a pixie tickling the back of my mind.
Always with the question. What if?
And the ever important, then what.
Sigh.
It wasn’t going away. They never do.
But now ideas go into Word docs.
They take up a heck of a lot less space.
Hell, I can even stuff ‘em in a cloud, a Terrabyte of space that may never be filled.
Endless room for things that one wants to consider.
At some point.
In the future. Right after I’m done with this WIP.
But…
That word doc turned into 10k words.
No worries. I’ve been there before.
Put ‘em in boxes and on to do lists and set them ready to wait their turn.
Still…
What if I built a cover for it?
Wrote a blurb?
And that one idea sparked six more.
Might as well outline the little buggers while I’m here. Simple word docs, stuffed in the cloud where they won’t bother anyone.
Especially me, cause I gotta get back to that WIP. That PIP.
Before I do that though, I haven’t spoken to my UF list in a little bit.
How many weeks?
Six. That’s too long. Let’s just do a quick check in to say hi, talk about the Fall trip to check out the leaves and visit the Ozarks.
I’ll drop the first two chapters of the idea in the letter.
Just to get some feedback.
Alright, hit send and get back to the WIP.
The words will not write themselves.
At least until the robots take over.
It is hard to think about hunting for survivors on a derelict space ship though.
Let me just get these other blurbs out of my head, and then I can concentrate.
Fine, I’ll go ahead and mock up the covers too, and then contact my designer to get on the schedule.
And check the emails I got back from my list.
Wow. Impressive response.
Okay, let’s thank those who took the time to write back.
And pop the first 10k words up on StoryOrigin to give to them.
A sort of how do you think it’s going question?
I should think about this some more though.
Like where would it go? When would I write it?
Christmas? December?
So I did.
Put up 6 pre-orders using rapid release.
Used Mock covers and the blurbs.
Got the dates locked and set on my own calendar.
Mapped out the word count by day to reach the goal.
Popped a link into the SO preview magnet.
And after week 1, I’m sitting on 36 pre-orders, full price, from a list I built from Freebie Seekers in promotions.
Here’s something interesting.
Book 1 is $2.99. 2 moves up to $3.99. 3 – 6 are $4.99
And I’ve got pre-orders for 10 of those.
So far.
While I was waiting for the review and publishing phase of KDP, I pulled out another couple thousand words (two chapters) to bank some words for my count.
What does it all mean?
I had an idea.
And right now, I’ve got about $40-$50 coming to me next year, from just an idea and a few blurb words.
Using techniques, I learned in this group.
Rapid Release.
Steady release.
Pricing strategy.
Blurb the right way.
Right niche. (urban fantasy)
Connect with “My” readers.
I’ll check how genre covers make a difference as they are made and added to the pre-order.
I’ve got targets in my head for the pre-orders.
(100 and growing with each release for the next in line)
I’ll also borrow some more tips I’ve learned, and try to get audiobook done by release day, along with Paperback and ARC reviews.
Now I’ve got some work to do.
Word counts to hit on my PIP. We’re gonna finish up this space adventure by Thanksgiving and fall face first into a magical world come the solstice.
(Using another little tip I picked up from this group. Take a couple of genres you like, add whiskey and mix well to make something new-ish.)
And stop thinking about all those ideas, just sitting in boxes and in the cloud waiting for a little action.
