He knew as soon as he hit it that it was gone.
First pitch.
First swing.
Last game.
We started the day at the ball fields at 8am.
It was closing in on 7pm and we still had a game to play.
But, #10 clocked one out of the park, the only home run of the weekend for the tournament.
It started a hot bat run for two innings that had us up by 7 to 0.
We were one run away from being done in the 4th.
Three outs.
Then the same kid who started it off, walked 3 batters, and the other team scored two runs.
Which meant as much time as it took to get three outs and three runs, which we did with a long single and a stand up double with a walked batter in between.
It was an expected win, but in baseball, sometimes butterflies or shiny things distract the players and the wheels come off.
We got home late and I knew it was a long weekend when the two night owls I live with were ready for bed before I was.
Except…
The A/C stopped working.
No problem at night because the temps were dropping into 60’s, so we could just open a window.
But the why of it bugged us.
And the timing.
The temp was set on 72 and it was only 75 inside, which means it was recent.
I’m not an HVAC guy.
But I do have a list.
Check and change the air filter.
Check and change the batteries in the thermostat.
Check the breaker outside.
Which is my limit after dark.
The AC pulls big power and is on the dark side of the house, so I wasn’t about to go poking around the wiring in the dark.
And I was too tired to hit up Youtube to figure out the next step.
The simple step would be to call for Service.
But I’d feel stupid if it was something simple, like press a reset button.
Which was an option and I did, once the sun came up.
Now a morning planned for one thing is spend working on another.
And I’m not good at HVAC, one, because I’m not a technician, and two, because I’m learning by doing as I go, it’s slow.
Which just takes more time.
It reminds me of that old adage about the mechanic who can charge $300 for just tapping a motor with a hammer.
It’s $1 for the tap, and $299 for the lifetime of experience of knowing where to tap.
I’ve got the $1 and need the $299 experience.
I try to use the whole thing as a reminder.
Things go great.
Things break.
I bet something else good is going to happen this week.
I suspect another surprise is on the horizon.
It’s hard to plan for A/C failure the last hot week of the summer.
One weekend later and the lows would be in the 50’s, which means a week or so of the house staying cool with mostly ceiling fans.
I call it open window season, and it’s always one of my favorites.
It makes me wish for an attic fan to pull in that cold air, but we don’t have one.
I’ll have to make due and pretend.
Like I do with the A/C because I’ve done the steps and it’s still got the open circuit code.
Time for more research.
Looks like another long day.
Did you go check out PACK IRON? A lot of people let me know the audio was compromised around 3 minutes in, so we adjusted it and uploaded a new version. Go hit SUBSCRIBE on YOUTUBE and check it out.
(The plan today was to make a new book and upload it, but that might wait until tomorrow.)
