Winter is coming.
The weather men are pretty excited about it.
We’re popping from the 80’s, which everyone agrees is “too hot for October.”
Down to the 40’s.
And they’re complaining, “What happened to Fall?”
The same complaint we made last year.
And the year before.
The joke is Fall lasts about a week.
Which is how it feels.
But…
If you’ll recall earlier this month, I made a prediction that it would be cold on Halloween.
Just as it has been for the past few years.
And wham bam, thank you ma’am , guess what.
We’re having a chilly trick or treat.
It wasn’t just a meteorological guess in the dark.
Or a fifty fifty shot of, either it will or it won’t.
I based it on experience.
On the 9 times out of 10 rule.
A good rule, and I’m pretty good at it.
Experience being the best teacher, I have learned a lot.
Usually by getting my ass handed to me, by life or bigger men, and the occasional woman verbally.
Maybe more women verbally than I care to admit.
I tend to bring out a side of people they wouldn’t care to show to the public.
I’m too… insert your word of choice.
Like knowing the answers to certain things that are routine.
It’s happened before.
Anyone who pays attention can make a pretty good go at guessing what will happen again.
Like this plan I have for a house in Pine Bluff.
Or the social media stuff I’ve been planning for myself for years.
Or Amazon stuff
Or other job stuff, like this daily newsletter
Those I don’t know what the answer will be, but I’m guessing…
That’s the hard part.
It’s easy to guess the weather because it follows a pattern.
People follow a pattern too, but aren’t as predictable.
Like people trained to do one thing find it hard to break that routine.
It happens in the way they think, the way they act, the things they do.
Like reading and never clicking one link.
Or drinking coffee out of the same mug, sitting in the same spot, doing the same thing.
4800 people reading this do one of the above.
Every day.
And I’m guilty of locking in on a routine too.
I’ve touted the benefits of it.
But the pattern can be a curse too.
Because it locks in a way of thinking that might not be beneficial.
So I spend time guessing on how to break my own patterns.
And share what I learn with you in hopes that you might too.
There’s nothing worse than a rigid mindset.
It’s part of the reason people get mad at my way of thinking.
Because I spend time actively working my way out of a rigid mind.
And it is work too.
Hard work.
Because patterns tell us one thing, like how people will act.
But they don’t always tell us how they will react outside the comfort zone.
And that’s just hard to guess what will happen.
