Are you good with deadlines, she asked.
Good?
It’s how I did almost all of my papers in high school and college.
Sitting in the parking lot or staying up the night before, cramming it all in while the clock tick tocked the minutes away.
Down to the wire.
Which is why lists are good.
That way you can look at what you missed by waiting until the last minute.
I’ve been told it’s self created stress.
That my body likes the chemical dump trying to cram five hours of work into two creates.
Not just in papers, but in everything.
Getting ready to leave for a weekend of baseball and it’s the same thing.
Sure, I get some stuff ready the night before, but after a long shift and cooking dinner, I don’t feel like packing and loading and prepping coolers and cleaning up.
I try to always clean up before we go so we come home to a nice place.
Plus there’s boarding the dogs, which is an adventure unto itself because they spend the first five minutes wondering is this a “car ride” for fun or going to the vet, going to the groomer or just going.
It is almost organized chaos, and the only organization to it is impressed by my need for it.
Bags lined here, snacks lined there, playlist at the ready.
And a car ride with me wondering what I forgot.
Which is why I make lists.
Lists that get longer with each thought.
Because I don’t want to miss anything.
Or forget.
I’ve made hundreds of trips in my life.
Maybe close to a thousand.
Packed a ruck sack and gear bag again and again.
And every time I’ve forgotten something, it wasn’t a crucial piece of equipment or necessity.
It was extra socks.
Or a toothbrush once.
Which is why the list gets long when time grows short.
Even if everything we ever need is probably available where we go.
If I could just keep that in mind, maybe deadlines wouldn’t leave me feeling dead exhausted once they’re done.
I’ll have to think about that more…later.
Do you wait until the last minute for things?

I love deadlines. I love the WHOOSHING sound they make as they go by.
I really try to avoid doing everything at the last minute but it doesn't always work out that way. I am definitely a list maker and I agree that it helps a lot in trying not to miss anything.
