I had a metal lunch box stamped with a 3-D relief.
The first one I can remember is Robin Hood, the Disney animated version with a fox and bear.
The next one I can remember is Battlestar, though I wanted Star Wars.
At least in my head, that’s how I remember it.
I bet it was bought at Magic Mart, and I bet it was on sale.
I’m also slightly sure it was the last year for lunch boxes of any sort, since 5th grade involved sack lunches and working in the cafeteria.
Earlier grades involved that too, which meant working for lunch so I can’t really recall why we had lunch boxes except for the occasional carry from home meal.
The years are not sometimes kind to childhood reasons, especially since my Mom did not give us many that weren’t colored by a version of mistruth.
We worked for some lunches because “it was fun,” and we took bologna sandwiches because they “tasted great.”
Which it was and they did, though work was never as fun nor bologna ever as good again.
I think I know the reasons.
My brother and I were huge Battlestar fans though.
I was Apollo, he was Starbuck and our cousin across town got a standard French Poodle that Christmas that he named Muffit.
He was two years older than me and did not want to play anything but football when we met up at Mamaw’s house.
The cousin, not the dog.
We didn’t need either though, not in our imagination.
The neighbor girl joined us sometimes as Athena, and together we battled many Cylons and saved the world hundreds of times.
If we weren’t fighting humanoid robots by your command, we were fighting Stormtroopers.
A playing field packed with a ton of imagination, for sure.
I imagine that if we didn’t have robots and soldiers as enemies, there would have been pirates or barbarians fought with wooden swords instead of laser pistols.
Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side.
