Why don’t you just…
She said.
She was full of advice.
A lot of people are.
They are quick to offer solutions to problems.
Sometimes before they even happen.
Which is why I try to use a roadmap.
People who have done what I’d like to do before.
How did they do it?
What did they encounter?
What obstacles almost stopped them?
At least I try.
Take writing for example.
I know the answer to almost every problem that pops up in an author career is one thing.
Write.
The advice I get a lot about increasing growth has to do with the next in a series.
Write the next book.
I talk to a lot of authors who write one book and expect a million bucks for it.
It is, after all, a staggering work of genius.
And I agree…
That it would be nice if it only took one book, one product, one video to hit that 1 Million dollar mark and then we could all just sit back and relax and reach a hand down the ladder to help the next aspiring writer up a rung.
Except
It doesn’t quite work out like that.
Not always.
I have to write the next book in a series because nothing sells older books like people going in and reading the new one, then heading back to check out what happened before.
I’m lucky enough to have people who will cross genres, but that’s not always the easiest way to start.
So I have to temper any advice I give to writers or creators or even marketing folks-
Because the answer is almost always “It Depends.”
Which I’ve found to be a good answer for almost any endeavor.
Like my plan this year to start a brand new Youtube channel for cooking.
Does the world need another cooking channel?
Well yeah, cause I plan to reveal secret recipes that only your Grandma knows.
And I’ve been talking about it for too long not to do it.
Or the new series about a broken man living on a homestead ranch in the middle of nowhere Texas.
Or all the old series that need new books.
Or the rest of it, as outlined in past posts and to be outlined in posts to come.
I think the best “Here’s what you should do…” starts with one word.
Why?
Why write? Why film? Why edit or send out a daily newsletter or do anything?
Once you find the why, the rest is easy.
For me, it’s about freedom.
I want the book business to grow so I can buy back time, which I can use on other things I want to do.
I want the cooking channel to pop because I have a lot of fun cooking and there are literally one hundred brand new things I want to try.
Plus, I worked for a bit on a show where chefs would come in and cook something on the air, and a lot of local news stations have just gotten away from it since 2020.
Why?
It’s a good question.
Why put out a free daily newsletter?
Why give away audiobooks on Youtube?
Why build worlds and make characters that people really enjoy?
Why don’t you just get a normal job and be happy?
That was the rest of the question.
And my answer is and has been the same for decades.
Because…
