Whenever I see someone tear down an old fence and pile it beside the road or the trash man it almost breaks my heart.
Not the loss of the fence but the waste of the wood.
The same thing when I watch urban renewal agency in Pine Bluff take a trackhoe and rip crush and mangle old dilapidated houses.
Logically I know the meth heads have gone in and stripped all the wiring and the rehab addicts have gone in and ripped out the walls down to the studs on most of them.
They need new roofs.
They need new floors.
They need new kitchens.
And new bath.
Plus wood work on the outside and probably updated Plumbing and wiring.
Because basically they are just shells of the homes they used to be.
But I still think about all that old growth 2x4 used to frame those homes and how solid it is compared to what is being grown and used today.
What a waste.
With fencing I suppose you could make shelves.
But fence board warps easy and it's super thin so it wouldn't hold much weight. As you know I live on a lake.
And starting around the end of March or first weeks of April after the last frost, the woods around the shallow water lake turn into a breeding ground for the state bird.
The mosquito.
They are gnarly bastards.
And they turn Twilight into an impossible time to stay outside.
Probably the only reason I am grateful for colder weather is it banishes that particular nemesis to the Third level of hell where it belongs.
I don't see as many bats around our neighborhood as I did Growing Up in LA.
Lower Arkansas.
Scientists say there may be population declines due to pesticides and habitat destruction and probably GMOs CIA and other alphabet stuff.
But I wonder. If I had a pickup truck and drove past a pile of fence on the side of the road waiting for the Friday dump truck pickup what if I just tossed it in the back and brought it home to make bat boxes.
A few simple cuts a couple of screws.
Maybe a couple of screws loose just for the idea.
And then random acts of installation.
Not just in my backyard but on trees near the lake and then the wet bottom lands where mosquitoes thrive.
And other random locations.
Bats are supposed to be able to eat a thousand mosquitoes a night.
And if I made homes for a thousand bats we might be able to make a tiny dent in the mosquito population.
I sometimes spend a little time thinking about why there are certain things on this planet.
I know ants exist because if they didn't there would be so many dead bodies and carcasses of people animals and others that we wouldn't be able to walk.
They help break down the bodies.
I still haven't figured out what purpose mosquitoes serve.
Except to buzz bite and turn my nights into a mess.
Maybe they wouldn't think I tasted so sweet it's a new how I plotted their demise.
