A rare confession.
That’s what it is.
Because even when I try not to do it.
I do.
Worry.
Because I know things.
Like secret things.
Things about the world and universe and faith.
All learned at the school of hard knocks.
A graduate degree in getting knocked down.
Working on a PHD in grit.
And I’d like to go back to when I was a kid
To find out why I feel so bad every time I’m proud.
Proud of work I’ve done.
Proud of work I’m doing.
And what the hell possessed me to hang out with anyone who said the work wasn’t worth it.
Not the books or videos or content of any type.
Cause that ghost comes up just about every time I type
Or click record
And that voice is loud
Almost as loud as the on inside me
The one from way back when so long ago I can’t remember
Except…
Man, sometimes, I really feel like I’m doing something
Maybe a whole lot of nothing
Maybe scattered like buckshot
Across this jack of all trade kind of career I’ve cobbled together
Picking ideas out of the ether and twisting it into something new
That voice makes it hard to know if anything is good
And makes it harder still to like something I think is
Good
But damned as I am
To keep making this up as I go along
And cursed as I am to keep wanting to write books and songs and build something
Sometimes…
I feel like I’m almost there
Almost good enough
Like this song today
That came on me while I was editing a new book.
And I had a pen in one hand while the other was pecking the keyboard to keep the spellcheck going
Sometimes I write something that really makes me proud of myself
