You’re supposed to ask, he said.
Every day.
Every way.
Because people do not think about you, they think about them.
Their POV.
Even if asking makes them mad.
Which is a weird reaction, really.
I work with a bunch of people who have one ambition.
Get high.
Every day.
They spend their hours of the day baked out of their brain and touching boxes.
And they complain to each other.
A lot.
The world is not shy of pothead philosophers.
In fact, most of the world’s religions were probably started by shaman’s getting high.
Throwing weird weeds into the fire, breathing in the smoke, and speaking with the gods.
Which may be how the folks I work with see themselves.
Seers and Oracles packed with wisdom.
About the man.
About work.
And about me, when I ask them to do something.
Part of the problem is me.
I have difficulty asking people to do something when I know I can do it better and faster.
It is a shortcoming for delegation.
If I can do more, better, faster, then why waste my time asking and cajoling and following up.
In short, I sometimes give people the opportunity to be accountable, and hold them to a high standard.
And am often left feeling…
Disappointed.
Another one of my faults.
Having expectation.
Except that I’m held accountable up the chain.
Someone, somewhere is watching.
And they want me to ask.
Ask folks to do something, which I have to repeat over and again because of the aforementioned brain baking.
Even in my own business, the asking should be more consistent.
All asks, all passive.
I mean, it’s not like asking angry eighteen year olds to empty a truck.
Or to put down the phone and let’s get rolling.
That happens a lot too.
People watching for me to walk by and walk away, and then popping a squat and watching Tik Tok or texting.
It all boils down to work ethic, and if you’ve been in the workforce for any length of time, you’ve seen it change.
Work.
And people’s approach to it.
Even mine.
